What if I ask you which app you can record a short music video in a few seconds? I think most of you will come up with the following icon in your head.
This short video making app, TikTok, has taken intern by the storm. The app records activity of 15 million users on daily basis and over 300 million in a month
Initially, a lot of people questioned the originality of TikTok, and many people saw it as copy of an app Musical.ly which came out from North America. This observation was understandable as both the apps allow user to make 15 seconds videos and target youth.
However, the users don’t have to wonder which app to use now, as Musical.ly was acquired by TikTok in November of 2017.
Unfortunately, today we are not going to teach how to have a 100 million followers on TikTok, after all, we are advertisers. So, from a marketing perspective let’s see these types of APPs are promoted.
We all know that the TikTok successfully expanded beyond China, after setting domestic territory on fire. Although, it has been banned by the Indonesian government because of some content issues, but that didn’t affected TikTok’s global appeal. The international version of the TikTok once even reached the top of the APP lists. That’s why its marketing methods cannot to be underestimated. By analyzing the Facebook page TikTok advertising, 3 of the following ads gripped our attention.
In addition to TikTok, Musical.ly, its recent acquisition, is also sparing no effort to push ads.
At first glance, this series of ads seems to have a pattern of short videos to attract attention, but in fact, the content published by each account has subtle differences.
It is obvious from the advertising content of TikTok and TikTok Advertising are aimed at the Asian population, which can be guessed from the featured models’ faces.
All the advertisements contain young boys and girls. The content has only a few video routines that are common to TikTok:
Gesture dance is a common way of showcasing talent on TikTok. A song is usually followed by instructive gestures matching the lyrics. If a video of high quality is produced, a large number of people will rush to imitate. Many people will try it after reading it and voila, there you have it! So, using this is a good to attract users promoting more app downloads.
There is also a feature to sing without music on TikTok. After perusing the ad, I found that if you have mastery in it, people can’t help but follow.
Sometimes, a person might feel shy to post a video alone. That’s why TikTok has a feature where you can post as a group of participants. Since in a group you get support from your friends to overcome the shyness. It proves the old adage true: the more the merrier!

The special effects that come with the TikTok are also the best its fun features. From the recent advertisements, we know about a cool rain control effect.
The technical flow is one of the more difficult features to use in the TikTok, but it still doesn’t stop people from trying, because of fun element surrounding it.
One of the most popular features of the TikTok app is the makeup change. In just 15 seconds, any girl or boy can transform into dazzling beauties and this features is enjoyed a large number of users.
The advertisements of TikTok including musical.lyare are obviously more inclined towards the European and American markets.
Different cultures, of course, have different idea of having fun and pastime. Accordingly, these two accounts allow shorter video making which is preferred by Europeans and American users.
In conclusion, I am trying to explain the overseas marketing strategy of TikTok. App ads must be positioned properly and should be considerate to accommodate cultural differences as well as preferences in them. It will result in attracting a larger audience. People can create, post and share the content they enjoy. Besides being sensitive to differences, the advertisement must mention the core and popular features of the app, so that it can push more people to download and use the app.
